An industrial boiler is composed of a pot and a furnace. The upper water-holding part is the pot and the lower heating part is the furnace. The integrated design of the pot and furnace is called a boiler. Boilers have a long history of development, so how did they develop and what is the structure of today's boilers? Let’s find out together.
Boiler structural types continue to change with the development of the times, and eventually there are two main evolutionary development directions.
One direction is to add a heating surface inside the cylinder based on the cylindrical boiler. Single-fire tube large boiler (Koenig boilers), double fire tube boilers (Lancashire boilers) and various pyrotechnic tube boilers have appeared successively. Depending on the location of the cylinder, this type of boiler can be divided into vertical and horizontal types.
Fire tube boilers are also called shell boilers. Its basic feature is to install a small cylinder, tube or other-shaped shell inside the large cylinder (pot shell) and completely isolate the large cylinder from the small cylinder, tube, etc. to form a jacket. It contains water, while small cylinders, tubes, etc. serve as combustion chambers and flues to accommodate fire traps or smoke.
Since the combustion system and steam-water system are limited to one pot shell, the evaporation capacity and steam parameters of this type of boiler are limited, the combustion effect and heat transfer effect are poor, and the boiler efficiency is very low. From a safety perspective, the combustion system is arranged in the pot shell, which causes the pot shell and internal components to be directly heated, worsening the working conditions; the load-bearing capacity of the pot shell is severely weakened by various openings, and the shape and structure tend to be complex. In addition, this type of boiler has a large water capacity, stores a lot of heat, and releases a large amount of energy once it is damaged. Therefore, this type of boiler has poor safety performance and the accident is more destructive.
However, shell-type boilers have better adaptability to load changes, lower requirements for water quality, easier maintenance and inspection, smaller smoke and wind resistance, and a ship uses natural ventilation. Therefore, this kind of boiler is still widely used in some small industrial sectors, transportation and domestic heating sectors.
Another direction is to increase the heating area outside the cylinder. That is, to break through the limitations of the pot shell and cylinder, set up a combustion chamber and heating surface outside the pot drum, and form and develop a "water tube boiler". Along this direction, people successively built water cylinder boilers, straight water tube boilers, and bent water tube boilers. At present, the most common ones are double-drum-bent water tube boilers and single-drum-bent water tube boilers.
The emergence of water tube boilers, especially bent water tube boilers, is a leap in the history of boiler development. Structurally, it provides the possibility to increase the evaporation capacity of the boiler and improve the steam parameters because a large enough furnace can be installed outside the drum and enough heating surfaces can be arranged. The tube type is heated to a smaller diameter and can withstand higher pressure. The bent water pipe has better elasticity and can withstand thermal expansion and contraction.
The steam and water system of a water tube industrial boiler furnace consists of tubes, headers and drums. The system is far more complex than that of a shell boiler, but its component structure is very simple. The drum is not directly heated, and the working conditions are superior to those of shell boilers. Even if a directly heated pipe explodes, its hazard is far less than that of a cylinder. Modern high-parameter and large-capacity boilers are all water tube boilers.
In the mid-1960s, a new industrial boiler with the structural characteristics of both water tube boilers and shell boilers appeared in China—a horizontal quick-installation boiler. Over the years, this kind of boiler has developed rapidly in our country and has become the largest boiler in China. However, its structural performance needs to be further improved.
